Kamilah Bywaters is a devoted educator, scholar, and community leader dedicated to advancing educational opportunities and social development for all students. With a wealth of experience as a K-12 licensed special education teacher in diverse educational settings including the Clark County School District, the District of Columbia Public Schools, and local charter schools, Kamilah brings a deep understanding of the complexities of teaching and learning.
Having earned both a Master of Education and a Master of Divinity, Kamilah is currently on the path to completing her Doctor of Philosophy in Special Education, furthering her expertise and commitment to serving students with exceptionalities. Her scholarly endeavors include co-authoring the research publication, “Preparing to Engage in Culturally Sustaining Practices in Urban Education Environments,” demonstrating her dedication to advancing inclusive educational practices.
Beyond her role as an educator, Kamilah actively engages in various leadership positions within the educational community. She serves as the President of the Las Vegas Alliance of Black School Educators (LVABSE), former Chair for Education for the National Action Network, Las Vegas Chapter (NAN), Co-Chair for the National Association of Equal Justice in America (NAEJA), Las Vegas Chapter, and a member of the Nevada Office of Minority Health and Equity subcommittee Black Leadership Advisory Council. In these capacities, Kamilah tirelessly advocates for educational justice for students, families, teachers, and staff, championing equity and empowerment.
Kamilah is dedicated to fostering collaborative relationships with key stakeholders in the education sector. She is a member of Congressman Horsford’s (NV-04) Equity Cabinet and has cultivated partnerships with esteemed institutions such as the U.S. Department of Education, Nevada State Department of Education, U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as state and local representatives.
With a commitment to making a lasting impact in her community, Kamilah is preparing to extend her engagement by running for the Board of School Trustees in District E in 2024. Her dedication to educational equity and social justice continues to inspire and uplift those around her.
